The north side of this cobblestone street dates back to the 1800s and the south side dates back to the early 1900s. In the early days this was home to private stables. After motor cars became popular in the early 1900s, the stables were converted to artist studios. In the middle part of the 20th century, NYU leased the entire street. Edward Hopper remained in his artist studio there until his death in 1966.
